Foreword
The province of Adıyaman is indeed nothing less than an open-air museum with its Mount Nemrut Historical Site, belonging to the Commagene civilisation, which has been called “8th Wonder of the World” and is included in the “World Cultural Heritage List” by UNESCO. Besides this striking site, the province is also rich with some 150 different localities of historical an cultural significance.
Furthermore, the territory of the province of Adıyaman includes %61 of the surface of the Atatürk Dam Lake, which harnesses the waters of the Euphrates as the lasgest dam in Turkey ( 4th lasgest in the world ) Whatever route you take to Adıyaman you come across cultural and historical treasures.
Those heading for Adıyaman along the Gaziantep-Besni route will observe the Dolmen Tomb, the Besni ruins and Sofraz and Sesönk Tumuli. Coming in from
Diyarbakır-Şanlıurfa route, we have the Atatürk Dam, Turuş Rock Tombs, Burç Mausoleum and Göksu Bridge; others choosing the Malatya-Çelikhan route will be fornuture to see the Haydaran Rock Inscription, Palanlı Cave and the Ancient City of Perre. Finally, along the Kahramanmaraş-Gölbaşı route, it is hard to exhaust the list of sites worth seeing. It includes the ancient bridges of Altınlı and vijne; Atmalı Rock Tombs; Adıyaman museum; Hısn-ı Mansur Castle and the Ancient City of Perre, one of the fşve major cities of the Commagene; Karakuş Tumulus; Cendere ( Septimus Severus ) Bridge; the Yeni Castle; Arsameia, the summer capital of the kingdom; Mount Nemrut with Antihochus I, who had set up the thrones of Zeus and other gods; Commagene ( Tyche ), the goddess of fertility; Apollo, the god of light; Heracles; the lion and eagle, which symbolise, respectively, the rule over the earth and the sky; stela of the royal Family and Stone tumulus.
